"No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened."
The 27th Amendment is saying that Congress are not allow to give themselves a raise until after the next election. It is to prevent Congress to from repeatedly raising their own salaries.
The picture above is Gregory Watson, who studied at the University of Texas at Austin, discovered the 27th Amendment in 1982. Watson assignment was to write a term paper on Equal Rights Amendment and through digging the books, he found out several states had passed the amendment and it was still out there. However, even with his discovery Watson received a C for his assignment.
This is the last amendment of the United States Constitution. The definition of this amendment is to prevent Congress to raise their own salaries cap. They cannot raise their salaries until the next election.
Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
The 26th Amendment gave the right for 18 years old to vote. This amendment was made into law since 18 years old boys were getting drafted during the Vietnam War.
In my opinion, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 opened doors to blacks and other minorities group to express their opinions and vote for a change. Since this amendment was passed, boys were getting drafted are considered responsible young men that went oversea to aid the people of Vietnam.
I think it is important for everybody to vote because people has fought for voting rights in the longest of time throughout history. One vote can make a difference and if you don't like how the government is running, just go out and vote for a change.
Section 1. In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.
Section 2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.
Section 3. Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.
Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.
The 25th Amendment deals with the succession to the presidency and create a procedure for filling a vacancy of the Vice President as well as to the President's disabilities.
After Woodrow Wilson suffered from a stroke that leave his left leg paralyzed, his wife Edith helped him during his last term in office. This amendment was passed just in case of an emergency, another government official can replace the president.
The picture above showed president Woodrow Wilson signing a document with the help from his wife. Edith served as an assistant, pointing out issues to his cabinets. This was controversial which lead to the ratification of the 25th Amendment.
Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
The 24th Amendment guarantees that no person can be denied the right to vote due to an inability to pay a tax prior to voting. The "poll tax" is now considered unconstitutional.
In my opinion, I think the government should find any strategy to make it easier for people to vote. I agree that some people want to vote, but the line was just too long or they cannot afford to miss work due to this economic crisis.
Congress ratified the 24th Amendment on January 23, 1964. This amendment prohibit any poll tax elections for federal officials. In my opinion, I think that this amendment needed to be passes because for example, you are waiting for a long to be old enough to vote. However, now you need money in order to vote. Not long ago, people in some states were required to pay a fee to vote.
Section 1. The District constituting the seat of Government of the United States shall appoint in such manner as the Congress may direct:
A number of electors of President and Vice President equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives in Congress to which the District would be entitled if it were a State, but in no event more than the least populous State; they shall be in addition to those appointed by the States, but they shall be considered, for the purposes of the election of President and Vice President, to be electors appointed by a State; and they shall meet in the District and perform such duties as provided by the twelfth article of amendment.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article using appropriate legislation.
The Twenty-third Amendment gave district residents the right to vote for president. Under the amendment the number of the district's electors cannot exceed that of the state with the smallest population. In practice, this means that the district elects three presidential electors.
This amendment gave the people the right to vote for the electors to represent them in D.C. Each state get two electors, however only Washington D.C. gets three electors.
The Capital: The 23rd Amendment Friday, Mar. 31, 1961
Thanks to a succession of oversights by the Founding Fathers and early Congresses, the residents of the District of Columbia have never enjoyed one particular constitutional right cherished by all other Americans: the privilege of voting. There was no reasoning attending the oversights; it was just plain neglect.† Last week Rhode Island cast the 36th affirmative vote for the 23rd Amendment to the Constitution, giving 746,000 Washingtonians the right to vote in presidential elections — and three electoral votes. Ohio and Kansas are expected to ratify the amendment this week, making the necessary two-thirds majority for official adoption (only one legislature—Arkansas—rejected the amendment outright, on the ground that 54% of the District's citizens are Negroes).
But after 161 years, Washingtonians will be limited to voting for the President and Vice President. They will continue to have no representative in Congress, no voice in their municipal government.
†One segment of the capital gained the right to vote in 1846, when one-third of the District's land area, now Arlington County, was ceded back to Virginia.
Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.
Section 2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.
The 22nd Amendment of the United States Constitution is saying that the president can only be elected for two terms, not three terms. Only one president in the United States' history that served four terms and it was Franklin D. Roosevelt. It wasn't after FDR's death that Congress pass this amendment.
The obverse side of a dime has the face of FDR to honor him for what he has done for the United States. An interesting fact of the dime is that FDR was not the first person to be featured on the dime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2005_Dime_Obv_Unc_P.png
Congress passed the 22nd Amendment after FDR's death to prevent a single party from having too much power. FDR was the only president in the United States' history to served more than two terms. In addition, Gerald Ford could have served the presidency for ten years due to the Watergate scandal; he was the only president that was not elected for the presidency and vice president.
Section 1. The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.
Section 2. The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.
Section 3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by conventions in the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.
The 21th Amendment of the United States Constitution repealed the 18th Amendment, which is prohibition. This amendment is considered wasteful because it takes an amendment to repeal another amendment that was already passed by Congress.
In in my opinion I think the government made the right decision by repealing the 18th Amendment. They thought that by banning alcohol beverages would decrease crime rate, however they were wrong. People will do just anything to consume alcohol, even if it means to rob and kill one another.
I was searching information for the 21st Amendment and I found out something very interesting. There is a restaurant/brewery/bar in San Francisco called 21st Amendment. I'm assuming the owner of this place must take this amendment to heart.
Section 1. The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin. Section 2. The Congress shall assemble at least once in every year, and such meeting shall begin at noon on the 3d day of January, unless they shall by law appoint a different day. Section 3. If, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President elect shall have died, the Vice President elect shall become President. If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, or if the President elect shall have failed to qualify, then the Vice President elect shall act as President until a President shall have qualified; and the Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President elect shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified. Section 4. The Congress may by law provide for the case of the death of any of the persons from whom the House of Representatives may choose a President whenever the right of choice shall have devolved upon them, and for the case of the death of any of the persons from whom the Senate may choose a Vice President whenever the right of choice shall have devolved upon them. Section 5. Sections 1 and 2 shall take effect on the 15th day of October following the ratification of this article. Section 6. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission.
The 20th Amendment contained six sections dealing with the terms of the president, vice president and other congressional leaders. Section 1 is saying that the presidential and vice presidential terms begin on January 20 and congressional terms begin on January 3rd. Section 3 and 4 deals with the presidential succession The amendment provides that the vice president elect shall become the president-elect and take office on January 20; the amendment also authorizes Congress to legislate on other matters of presidential succession.
In my opinion, I think the auto industry should receive the money for bailout from the government. However, if the government doesn't bail them out, then who would? The people already suffered from the economy and if the government doesn't bail them out then it would hurt us a lot more.
The cartoon depicted former president George W. Bush as a lame duck. The term lame duck referred to a president who already served two terms, therefore cannot be reelected. Usually their power is longer take effective by the end of their terms so they began spending on luxurious items. With that being said, Congress pass the Lame Duck Amendment in 1934 to have the president in office by January to avoid complications.
"The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. It wasn't until fifty years after African American male could vote that this amendment was passed by allowing women to vote.
The 19th Amendment was passed by president Woodrow Wilson, which helped his campaign. In my opinion I think everybody should be treated equally. It doesn't matter what color skin you are, religion, gender, age, or ethnicity, people should have the same equality no matter what. I guess back in the days, people considered women as property such as African American. Woman's suffrage has come a long before they were granted the right to vote thanks to Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony; however they did not live to see their dream come true.
The message the cartoon is saying that men are more powerful than women. The woman in the cartoon is trying to crack a large nut and the message on the nut is saying that there is no equal suffrage in this country. What I found humorous about this cartoon is the message "A nut she doesn't try to crack!" Even though women' suffrage is wrong, I think they have come a long way to fight for their rights and should be treated equally just like men.
Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.
Section 2. The Congress and the several States shall have concurrent power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Section 3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.
The 18th Amendment has to deal with prohibition on liquor. This amendment was overturned due to drinker finding different ways to drink, especially underground, saloons or night clubs. These saloons and night clubs ran by gangsters such as Al Capone and Joseph P. Kennedy, father's of the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Joe Kennedy made a fortune by illegally selling liquor underground.
The government decided to ban alcohol by passing the 18th Amendment due to high crime rates. For the most part, it was women that pushed for this amendment. However, by prohibiting alcohol, people will break the law and will do anything to find a way to drink booze. Crime rate started increasing even higher than before. Joseph Kennedy Sr. and Al Capone were two of the most well known for dealing liquor underground and on the Black Market.
Some of us don't know that Al Capone actually has a nice side than what we normally depicted him as a gangster. Since a few of his members died from drinking milk that they didn't realize that it was expired. Since that happened, Al Capone was the one who suggested the idea to put the expiration date on milk bottles. Despite all of the crimes he committed, he also gave job to people.
